More About Foothills at Red Oak Recovery

Foothills at Red Oak Recovery is an LGBTQ+ friendly program. We are affirming and allies of the gender non-binary community. As with all assessments that take place for appropriateness and clinical fit prior to enrollment, we assess each person’s needs individually to support the path that they are on as they move into our community of compassion, acceptance and connection. Our hope is that we can support recovery and healing no matter what our clients identify with and that they are able to find personal growth and healing in doing so.

From substance use, trauma, co-occurring issues, and gaming addiction, we understand the unique challenges this age group faces. With the pressure of performing well in school, the stress of what will come next, and the anxiety of dealing with peers, we know how the mind of a teen works and what treatment will help.

Our facility is on a sprawling 94-acre horse farm in Ellenboro, North Carolina, and plays an integral part in the healing process. By removing ourselves from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding cities, we provide teens with a calm, welcoming environment where they’ll feel comfortable and safe. Our team, which is made up of masters-level clinicians (clinical addictions and mental health), gives you the treatment you need.

Our Developmental Approach

Adolescence is a time of self-discovery and identity formation. Erik Erikson, a renowned developmental psychologist describes this stage of life as Identity vs Role Confusion. If one successfully navigates the tasks during this stage of life, one emerges with a solid sense of identity. This is a sense of knowing oneself despite the chaos and pressures of the world around them and is paramount to making healthy, value-based decisions.

Research indicates that without truly understanding oneself, one is more susceptible to:

  • Substance use
  • Peer pressure
  • Emotional and behavioral volatility
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

When individuals are experiencing role confusion, they make choices that they regret, and fail to understand their feelings and actions. Individuals will also try many unhealthy things such as:

  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Excessive playing of video games
  • Excessive cell phone use
  • Skipping school
  • Behavioral issues
  • Defiance

They do so to alleviate the feeling of emptiness they are experiencing. Unfortunately, the choices made during Role Confusion are often so concerning they require immediate family attention.

The clinical team at Foothills at Red Oak Recovery treats the entire person and focuses on symptom reduction, behavior change, as well as a true, healthy understanding of themselves.

How We Can Help

Whether we are fully aware of our values or not, we often feel depressed, anxious, guilt, and shame when we act in ways that do not reflect the values that are important to us. If one does not know their values, it is much harder to recognize how these feelings are indications that their choices do not align with the person they truly want to be. Instead, they often lead to a great sense of powerlessness, confusion, and overwhelm.

Our Therapies

Our relational approach to evidence-based and holistic clinical practices helps young men and their families. The goal is to help them find the hope that they lost so they can achieve the goals they have for themselves. This focused approach to wellness includes individual therapy, group therapy, milieu therapy, family therapy, equine therapy, and recreation therapy.

In addition to traditional group and individual therapy, therapists at Foothills at Red Oak Recovery facilitate therapy utilizing numerous experiential interventions. These include equine therapy, ropes course, adventure activities, sports, yoga, and mindfulness. Furthermore, the clinical team is involved in the day-to-day activities of each client. This intentional level of involvement helps clients integrate the things they are learning about themselves in therapy into their everyday interactions. Since this real-time clinical approach takes place in a small, nurturing, home environment the skills are easily transferable to environments beyond the program.

Our Treatments

With our wide range of services and treatment options, our team can help your teen through a number of problems. We provide the following:

Substance use treatmentFor some, substance use is a way to experiment with the unknown. Teens tend to use as they begin to learn more about themselves. For others, using illicit substances is a way to escape the stress and manage their anxiety or depression. Treatment can help address use before it becomes a more severe problem.

Co-occurring issues– Mental health issues combined with substance abuse make living a normal life impossible. Through treatment, teens can learn early on how to manage co-occurring issues successfully.

Trauma treatment– Traumatic events can leave a serious impression on adolescents and teens. Trauma treatment allows our clients to heal and move through their trauma in a healthy way.

Process addiction treatmentA process addiction occurs when an individual experiences compulsions to go through the motions of activity, like constantly checking the cell phone, excessively playing video games, or spending unnecessary amounts of time with other technology. Treatment helps clients manage these compulsive behaviors.

Disordered eating treatmentMany teens struggle with self-acceptance during these difficult years. Because of their trouble with body image, they often suffer from disordered eating or unhealthy exercise patterns. Our treatment teaches clients to have a healthy relationship with food and exercise.
