Foothills at Red Oak Recovery is dedicated to helping your male teen recover from a traumatic life event or other mental health challenges. We also assess adolescents through psychological and psychiatric testing. In working with our teens we utilize reality therapy. Maslow was not the only psychoanalytic theorist. If you have ever asked yourself “what is reality therapy?” – we are glad you asked. Reality therapy is a therapeutic approach to counseling. Dr. William Glasser developed reality therapy as a therapeutic approach in the 1960s. If you’ve ever wondered about reality therapy in North Carolina for teens, Foothills at Red Oak Recovery can assist you.
What Is Reality Therapy?
Reality therapy is different from general mental health treatment therapies in that it doesn’t attribute problems to illness. Problems are attributed to poor choices. Conversely, positive choices can turn your life around. The reality therapy program is quite effective for adolescents, who are taught at Foothills at Red Oak Recovery to focus on the positive. Adolescents are counseled to make better life choices and implement problem-solving skills to achieve those goals.
This treatment modality empowers teens due to their investment in the process of getting better.
Making better choices is the general goal of reality therapy. These better choices lead to healthier relationships, effective problem-solving skills and ultimately, the achievement of life goals.
Glasser set the five basic psychological needs on the following:
Is Reality Therapy The Only Option?
We strive to teach teens that failure is not an option. After they’ve made the steps to come into the program, we encourage them until they are successful. In addition to reality therapy, there are other therapeutic interventions at our facility, including:
The Good News About Reality Therapy
A therapist will work with your teen in order to develop an efficient life plan. When a teen is engaged with their therapist working on a life plan, they implement goals to reach a successful end. If they are not successful, the therapist will work with them in order to develop a new life plan. This is how Foothills at Red Oak Recovery shows teens that they need to keep trying in life to be successful. If at first you don’t succeed, try again! In the process, the teen continues to learn new effective life skills and independent living skills that they can utilize in their life outside of the treatment center. In short, reality therapy helps teens effectively deal with their own individual reality.
